Squeeee! I am still learning the difference between squirrel and chipmunk. So what makes this little guy a bit of each?
[this is good]
Those are great pics, Cranky! I haven't seen a ground squirrel since I was a kid.

well, the fact that he's a squirrel makes him a squirrel... :-P j/k

To me, (unprofessional know-nothing) his size is between a squirrel and a chipmunk. The coloring and the face is squirrel like, the tail is not quite as bushy as a squirrel, but similar (looks like a baby squirrel actually). and chipmunks have black and white stripes down their backs, so the spots are like stripes that have been partially erased. :-P Plus chipmunks live in holes in the ground (or in the window pit at my mom's old house), squirrels usually are tree dwellers.

Hi EF! Thanks, he was one of the more cooperative critters from my trip!
Ha, okay. I know I sound like an idiot but I really didn't know the difference and I've been squeeing at these guys for years. Mr. IG thinks I'm brain dead. He just glares at me and says, "Do you see a tail??"

He's soooooo cute! And I love his coat. Wow.
chipmunks-- anybody want some? I have a colony here....
that's great you took all the shots- each is different. I really like the one where his eyes are squinty -- either he's checking you out and not too sure what you are, or he's nodding off.......
GREAT pix!!!
LOL-- you don't sound like an idiot. I mean, there are critters down there in TX or overseas that I've seen that are common (pests or otherwise) that I would go nuts for and not know the difference between too. We take them for granted, I don't expect you to. Also, not everyone sees chipmunks that often. Robbbie lives further outside the city than I do, as does my oldest sis, so I don't see chipmunks very often since everyone's backyards here are the size of a baby pool, and chippies like to have some ground. So chipmunks are a novelty to me. And I will always squee over a squirrel.

haha thanks!

I think I just caught him mid blink in that pic!! :)

Aww, you don't get chipmunks much, there? I didn't realize that! Yes, I guess they do like to spread out -- dig into the ground, and walls and under things.
Do you get the squirrels that never come to the ground? I think they're red squirrels - but I'm not sure. They run through the trees and along the overhead wires; they're TINY and red. Sweet! Across Baltimore Pike is a colony of black squirrels -- next to Granite Run Mall -- prettiest fur. Wowee.

Hey, this is a great thread -- we're all nuts for squirrels -- lol
Hee! It is half-chipmunk, half-skwerl. He's got more of the chinless chipmunk face that I adore, though. I love those little thirteen stripe chippies.
I haven't seen those red dewds! cute! (well, not that I have noticed) I have noticed an increasing # of the black squirrels around here too, I think they are so adorable. I know I got some pics last fall, I don't have time to link you up though because I gotta get ready for my mom's shindig!

LOL, I've always heard of Mexican Ground Squirrels but I thought it was a joke like Land Shark or something. He's a very festively spotted little dude, ain't he?
I didn't know that chipmunks live in the ground. I guess the fact that I saw one go into a hole in our front yard last year isn't nearly as interesting as I thought it was. The hole is still there, but I wonder what happened all winter long while it was buried under feets and feets of snow.

Neato - We don't have ground anything around here - well, ground bees (always a big hit at yard parties or while mowing grass)
I want one! I like the squinty eyed shot. If it weren't anatomically impossible...I'd say he had some deer in him too..heh

Ground skwerl? Teh Qte! One question though - do you have to have them ground or can you serve them as fillets too?
lol you are so baaaaad!

He's like a squirrel with SPOTS!
Kind of like a fawn.
This guy is entirely too cute.
Would you love me any other way? ;)

brave little dude. great pictrures

Awww he is just completely adorable and They are always cute when they have not taken up residence in your yard. ; )

probably not! :)
in my family, we were very scientific -- if they ran overhead, they were skwerls and if they lived in the ground, they were chipmunks. Which is pretty much what everyone called 'em.

So when mom first moved there, she was all "Hey! The chipmunks are spotted like fauns here!" And of course the roadrunners. They lived on the very edge of town then, so there were plenty critters. Now the city goes on for miles further, but the arroyos are still critter-ful.

I shall name him peepers.

And you knew it was a Mexican Ground Squirrel because he jumped out of the hole and said, "¡Hola, chica! ¿Dónde los pacana están?"
Not to be a nuffer but don't touch them they carry Bubonic Plague. So do California Ground Squirrels and they live in my neck of the woods. They really are cute though.

And PCnotPC perhaps you can know they are Mexican ground squirrels, because they jump out, take the California ground squirrels jobs and apply for welfare at the same time.

Oh btw I have a California G.S. living in my back yard. Sarah is so excited about that. She hopes one day to catch him and make him hers.

Yup. In my neck of the woods they carry Hanta virus, even scarier.
isn't that what hammies carry sometimes too?
Oh, you're thinking of the Hamsta virus. Ha! I know mice carry it, but I'd never heard of hammies having it.
Love Love Love Love Love Love Love Love Love Love Love Love
The cutest thing ever.
You are the squirrel-whisperer.
The day after posting I had to brake for a skwerl. He was standing in the middle of the road as if looking to see what I was going to do. I hit the brakes and he ran across in front of me. I swear he was looking for moi, the skwerl nuffer.
